Overview

Whether we’re laughing or smiling, life is best lived full of expression. Over time, those expressions begin to leave their mark in the form of wrinkles and creases, it’s inevitable as we age. The most popular option to easily address those wrinkles and creases are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, such as the Restylane® family of fillers.

Restylane®’s hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, like many others, are made of natural, synthesized and fully degradable FDA-approved hyaluronic fluid – a natural substance that is already present in your skin. Restylane® fillers, such as Restylane® Lyft and their latest innovations Restylane® Refyne & Defyne are injectable treatments that are safely performed in an office setting in as little as 30 minutes with only 1 or 2 tiny injections.

The Restylane® family of fillers was designed with facial expressions and movement in mind. Their fillers, such as Restylane®, Restylane® Kysse, Restylane® Contour and Restylane® Lyft, formerly known as Perlane®, can be used in a variety of ways such as plumping the lips, smoothing the lines and wrinkles around the mouth, and improving the look of the lines and creases that run from the nose to the corners of the lips and down to the chin, known as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane®, Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne can also be used to fill the hollowness under the eyes, to fill deeper wrinkles and cheek depressions and improve acne scarring. When done correctly Restylane® dermal fillers can provide full facial rejuvenation.

Having more experience with hyaluronic acid fillers, including Restylane® & Restylane® Lyft, and wrinkle relaxers such as BOTOX® and Dysport® than most cosmetic surgeons in the nation, Dr. Schlessinger is a natural choice for this type of procedure.

Restylane®, and many of the other fillers from the Restylane® family, are comprised of XpressHAn™ Technology, which produces a smoother, more pliable filler that allows you to maintain your natural-looking expression. The results are subtle and natural-looking, allowing for softer textures and a plumper, more youthful appearance.

Injections with Restylane® fillers are a patient-friendly and a preferred choice over invasive surgery. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and therefore it also dissolves naturally with time and is integrated into your body’s tissues. Hyaluronic acid fillers act much the same way. Fillers, such as those from the Restylane® family of fillers, are like an ice cube in your body, it will dissolve slowly from the heat and your metabolism only the process is spread over a period of several months. The effects of hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers, such as Restylane®, JUVÉDERM® and RHA® fillers, can last months.

There are many wrinkle fillers within the Restylane® family of fillers. Each designed for the different areas of the face which perform different movements or expressions. The structure of each Restylane® filler is unique which enables Dr. Schlessinger to design and deliver results unique to you.

Restylane® and Restylane® Lyft, a few of the original fillers from the Restylane® family of fillers, nicely fill fine lines and wrinkles, add volume and contour to the cheeks and lips and lift areas where skin may be beginning to sag due to age. Overall, these fillers were designed for restoring your youthful appearance all while maintaining your natural expression and movement.

Restylane® Refyne and Defyne are next-generation flexible hyaluronic acid fillers that help smooth the appearance of wrinkles and deep-set expression lines while still maintaining a natural look. These fillers are FDA-approved to treat nasolabial folds, or ‘laugh lines.’ They provide a range of flexibility and support to meet different patient needs. Restylane® Refyne & Restylane® Defyne also contain a small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic to numb the skin, making treatment more comfortable. While Refyne is designed to improve the appearance of wrinkles and folds, Defyne is designed to smooth deeper facial wrinkles and folds. The flexible gel allows these fillers to move with your skin, giving your expressions a softer and more natural appearance. Additionally, it can be used for chin augmentation, correcting mild-to-moderate chin retrusion, without the need for invasive surgery. If you want a natural-looking solution built for defining the lower facial contour with long-lasting results, Restylane® Defyne filler may be a treatment to consider.

Restylane® Contour is specially formulated with XpressHAn Technology™, comprised of cross-linking hyaluronic acid, which moves within skin to add definition to cheeks while still allowing for the natural movement that comes with expression. Restylane® Contour, like other hyaluronic acid fillers in the Restylane® family of fillers, also contains a small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic to numb the skin.

Restylane® Silk is used to add volume to the lips and plump skin to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, often referred to as “smoker’s lines.” A key factor in promoting plump, youthful lips is collagen; something our body produces less of as we age. Similar to the face, our lips begin to look less plump, less smooth and overall, less rosy the older we get. The upper lip thins, and lip wrinkles become more pronounced.

How can you restore your lips to a more youthful state? Restylane® Silk and the latest Restylane® lip filler, Kysse, are treatment designed specifically to enhance volume, smooth the lips and minimize lines above the upper lip.

Restylane® Kysse is the first hyaluronic acid lip filler treatment designed specifically to add volume to a thinning upper lip. Restylane® Kysse was also developed with XpressHAn™ Technology, a method that allows for optimal tissue integration, meaning the filler spreads smoothly, resulting in a more precise, aesthetic look. Lip enhancement with hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers has up to twice the longevity of standard collagen implant treatments. This innovative hyaluronic acid (HA) lip filler augmentation plumps lips while leaving your lips looking more natural than any other treatment previously available.

Once placed, the filler creates volume, contour and lift within the skin, resulting in a more healthy and vital appearance. When injected into the lip, it can restore a more natural and sensuous look. In contrast to other biodegradable implants, Restylane® filler is not extracted from animals. This means there is no risk of allergic reaction. Therefore, it is perfectly safe to use instantly without pre-testing.

The treatment is performed by injecting Restylane® under your skin. Since no pre-test is needed, your procedure can usually be done in less than one hour. Many patients like the added comfort provided with an anesthetic cream, while others prefer an anesthetic block. This makes the treatment relatively painless.

Dr. Schlessinger recommends that patients stop taking any aspirin or aspirin-like products about a week or so before the procedure to decrease the likelihood of bruising. This would include Motrin and Aleve (Tylenol would be okay to continue). Some patients may experience slight bruising at the injection site, which can be covered with a little makeup.

Talk with Dr. Schlessinger prior to your procedure about your goals for using Restylane® or another filler and feel free to ask any other questions regarding cosmetic procedures. Dr. Schlessinger and his patient coordinator are very willing to answer questions and want to hear from you if you have any.

Your results will depend on your overall goal and suitability. Dr. Schlessinger is very diligent about letting patients know if they are good candidates for treatments and choosing which treatment and products may work best for your individual needs. Every person is unique therefore every treatment plan is unique.

Depending on the area treated, most folds and wrinkles can be treated with one treatment. Repeat maintenance treatments are recommended in order to maintain your results as these fillers are not permanent. After your first injections, another treatment is not usually required for approximately 6 months or longer. By experience, these products last almost twice as long as collagen injections. The great thing about Restylane® fillers and others hyaluronic acid fillers is that you can replenish your natural beauty whenever you feel the need. Because these fillers are not permanent and their longevity varies, Dr. Schlessinger is able to curate a treatment plan based on the results you’re looking for. There is also the flexibility of having an enhancement treatment performed any time you like after the previous treatment, in order to maintain your results.

There is no set timeline on how long a filler lasts. The longevity of each filler is different and naturally everyone’s body breaks down fillers at varying rates. It also depends on how much is injected and where the fillers are injected. If too little filler is placed in an area where more is recommended then you will not achieve the result you are looking for and the filler will not last for a meaningful amount of time.

Wrinkle relaxers and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are the perfect duo. You can have hyaluronic acid fillers injected at the same office visit along with BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau®. When paired together wrinkle relaxers and hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers can help you achieve full facial rejuvenation.

  1. One of our patient coordinators will greet you at our office in Omaha, Nebraska. Our coordinators and nurses assist patients with every step of their aesthetic journey from consult to treatment, they’ll be with you every step of the way.
  2. You will have a consultation in our comfortable and high-tech office of the patient coordinator, meeting with Dr. Schlessinger to discuss your aesthetic goals and answer any questions you might have.
  3. Your patient coordinator will take photographs to show you where your concerns, whether they’re specific to fine lines and wrinkles or skin laxity and dark circles, may be improved and they’ll review options with you. These before images are important and will be used to compare with your results 2 weeks later at your complimentary follow-up appointment.
  4. If you are a good candidate for injections, and choose to move forward with treatment, your face and any other areas indicated by Dr. Schlessinger for the Restylane® injections, will be cleaned and a potent topical numbing solution will be applied with your comfort in mind.
  5. Dr. Schlessinger will personally perform the Restylane® injections. At Schlessinger MD the only individual who works on you is the doctor.   6. The actual injections are quick and nearly painless as Dr. Schlessinger uses a slow and steady technique refined over the thousands of injections he has performed. A very small amount of Restylane® is injected with an ultra-thin needle very precisely into several areas. Most patients compare the sensation to a little sting.
  7. You can resume normal activities almost immediately.

It is important to see a licensed medical doctor who personally performs his or her own injection treatments. Seeing a knowledgeable, skilled physician who is an expert in facial anatomy, has experience with performing thousands of injection treatments, and is ethical in educating his or her patients on the best fillers to use, and where to use them, is critical when choosing a provider. Dr. Schlessinger is a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, which is an important distinction.

If you are taking antibiotics, there should be no problem continuing them if you have this procedure. But talk with the doctor about all medications you are taking.

Discomfort is minimal. With years of experience & honed skill, Dr. Schlessinger uses safe numbing techniques when injecting, to ensure patients are comfortable during their treatment.

The injection treatment site may have a little swelling, which may only last a few hours to days, though it is possible for swelling to last a bit longer in some cases. Slight bruising, if it appears at all, varies from person to person and can be covered with concealer or makeup. Depending on the area treated, Restylane® fillers, such as Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk and Restylane® Contour, can last up to 6 months or longer. If the lips are treated, initial swelling and tenderness may occur within the first few days, but subsides after 2 or 3 days.

Some of the more popular fillers are within the Restylane® family of fillers such as Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Kysse, and their newest hyaluronic acid filler Restylane® Contour. Other similar products are within the JUVÉDERM® collection of fillers and the RHA® collection of fillers.

The differences among these products – Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, RHA® fillers- are very minor. Dr. Schlessinger sometimes uses one or the other depending on patient preference and goal.

JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® XC – an alternative to Restylane® Silk and Kysse – is great for very fine lines on the lips as well as etched lines on the face. Contact Schlessinger MD today for more information.

The area where the Restylane® injections are done may be a bit tender and swollen, but this shouldn’t keep you from your normal daily routine.

Make sure you have discussed all medications you are taking with the doctor before the procedure. Some may cause bruising and should be stopped well before the procedure. Be sure to avoid taking ibuprofen (Aleve), aspirin, and herbal supplements for up to 2 weeks prior to your visit if you can.

Some patients experience hypersensitivity, nodules, redness and swelling at the injection site. Temporary bruising can occur. Lips can be particularly sensitive to bruising. Cold compresses can help here. You’re more likely to have less bruising with a skilled and experienced injector.

Patients who want to have fewer wrinkles, more volume or a lifted appearance and want to look younger are the ideal candidates for Restylane® filler injections. The best candidates for Restylane® Lyft (Perlane®) injections are people who are interested in addressing perioral lip lines, increasing lip volume, and smoothing away the nasolabial folds. Restylane® Silk is best for patients looking for a way to resolve smoker’s lines around the lips or add volume to thin lips. Being in good health is important, and realistic expectations are vital.

Since Restylane® Kysse is a specialized lip filler, it is ideal for patients who desire fuller lips. This product is also helpful for patients in search of a non-surgical way to address lipstick lines around the mouth.

You should be in good health and should also have realistic expectations. Every person is unique and individual results may vary. Restylane® injections would not be advised for pregnant women and patients with severe health conditions.
