Conveniently located to serve Omaha, NE

Overview

Acne is one of the most common skin issues that people of all ages deal with on a daily basis. Dr. Joel Schlessinger and Dr. Daniel Schlessinger, double board-certified dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons and Mohs surgeons, and the Physician Assistants at Schlessinger MD in Omaha, work to provide successful, long-term treatment options for our patients with acne concerns. Our providers have the medical background to look at all aspects of the condition to work towards an effective solution that will result in quick improvement.

Not all acne is the same, which is why some at home skin care products or remedies don’t always work. Sometimes what a patient thinks is acne turns out to be another easily treatable skin condition, such as yeast infection or another skin infection.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger has been on the forefront of research in acne for over 25 years and has helped to develop most of the new treatments for acne in his onsite clinical research center. Some of those treatments include Differin, Epiduo, Aczone and many other cutting edge treatments.

Common causes of acne

There can be many causes of acne, which is one of the reasons why it might be difficult for you to manage on your own and to achieve effective results.

One of the most common causes for acne is hormonal changes, which are fairly typical among teens due to puberty. This is also why acne can occur during and after pregnancy.

You might also think that because you’re an adult, you shouldn’t have to deal with acne. This isn’t necessarily true, acne can affect you all any age, teen or adult.

You may also get acne after consuming certain types of food that are full of sugar and carbohydrates. Other common causes of acne are stress and lack of proper rest. Certain types of medication can also cause an outbreak of acne blemishes. The severity of the acne breakout can vary depending upon what triggered it.

When to come in for acne treatment

There are many home and over-the-counter remedies available for you to treat acne on your own. However, when the outbreak of acne persists or is causing pain or discomfort, you are advised to schedule a consultation with a board certified Dermatologist, for treatment as soon as possible.

Acne treatment cost

Acne treatment costs can vary depending on what types of treatments are used or recommended and the duration of the treatment. Generally, the treatment of acne is covered by most insurance companies and the frequency of your follow up visits can be discussed when you schedule a consultation. The cost of prescription drugs can also vary dependent upon your insurance coverage.

Patient reviews

★★★★★

I came into Dr.S’s office with adult acne. I suffered on and off since I was 13. It was time to go back to a dermatologist but I did not know where to start. He had the best reviews so I took a chance. Today, I have clear skin!!!! I no longer need to wear foundation. My life has changed for the better and I can’t recommend him enough. Only took 3 months. Didn’t have to try 100 different topicals or medications. He knew first day what would work for me.

Q&A with Dr. Schlessinger

Your commonly asked questions answered.

Acne is a common cosmetic issue that everyone goes through at various stages of their lives and for varying reasons. A few common factors that can cause an acne breakout include when your skin’s pores get clogged due to excess sebum or “oil” production, an accumulation of dead skin cells which can also clog pores, bacterial infections, changes in hormone levels and even cosmetic products. When these happen, a break out of pimples including whiteheads, blackheads, and painful cystic lesions can occur. The way these lesions present themselves can vary in terms of size, color, quantity, and location. Some of the worst acne outbreaks can result in painful swelling of the face that is extremely sensitive to the touch. Untreated acne can also result in permanent scarring.

During a consultation, our providers will carefully assess your acne. They’ll ask questions regarding lifestyle factors that can lead to acne, along with questions about your complete medical history and all past treatments.

After developing a greater understanding of the condition, our team will discuss treatment options with you, in detail, and recommend an ideal course of treatment which may include topical or oral prescription medications, an at-home skin care regimen, along with laser or med spa treatments.

One of the best ways to prevent acne break outs is proper hygiene. Maintaining a healthy diet is also important. Avoiding products such as cow’s milk, body building supplements or proteins can also help prevent acne caused by hormonal fluctuations. Other ways to prevent acne are through simple lifestyle changes such as choosing the right skin care products, limiting sun exposure, avoiding tanning beds and by drinking plenty of water to keep yourself and your skin hydrated.

“I always love seeing the results of our treatments for acne. It can make a huge difference in patients’ lives and self-confidence!”
