Fuller, more defined lips are one of the most popular treatments currently, but many patients struggle to understand the difference between a lip flip and lip filler. Both enhance the lips, just in different ways. Your choice depends on your desired results—subtle definition or added volume.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon, explains, “Both treatments are designed to enhance the appearance of the lips, but they work in different ways.”

“If you want a more defined look without any added volume, a lip flip may be the right choice. On the other hand, if you’re looking for plumper, fuller-looking lips, lip filler might be the better option. Lip flip works by injecting Botox or other neuromodulator and doesn’t add any volume to the lips.”

In some cases, these treatments can be combined to achieve your desired outcome. Dr. Joel Schlessinger explains, “I really enjoy pairing both treatments, as that helps  our patients achieve a fuller, more defined lip shape while maintaining a natural, balanced appearance.”

Read on as we discuss what a lip flip is, what lip filler is, the difference between the two and which one is right for you.

What is a lip flip?

A lip flip is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that enhances the upper lip’s appearance using a small amount of botulinum toxin, such as BOTOX®. These injections relax the muscles of the upper lip, causing the lip to roll outward, creating the appearance of a fuller upper lip.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger, a board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon, explains, “A lip flip is ideal for patients who want a slight enhancement without added volume. It’s a great way to achieve a natural, relaxed shape. A lip flip is also a great option for those who want to reduce a gummy smile. ”

The treatment itself is quick, typically taking less than a minute, with minimal discomfort—most patients describe it as a few small pinches. There is no downtime, though you may experience mild swelling or tenderness for a few hours. Because these muscles become relaxed, some patients may experience difficulty pursing their lips or sucking on a straw. The full results are visible within ten to fourteen days and last about six to eight weeks. Your dermatologist may recommend coming in for an occasional touch-up to better maintain your results.

What is lip filler?

Unlike a lip flip, lip filler adds volume to lips using hyaluronic acid-based injections, such as Juvéderm or Restylane Kysse. These fillers not only enhance lip fullness but also help to improve symmetry and definition, making it a fantastic option for those seeking plumper, fuller lips.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger shares, “Lip filler is a great option for patients who want noticeable volume and long-lasting results. We tailor each treatment to achieve the desired results for each of our patients, from subtle plumpness to a more dramatic, fuller look. Our younger patients usually desire a fuller, plumper lip, while older patients may simply want better definition to reverse volume loss that has occurred over time.”

Lip filler treatments typically begin with a topical numbing cream to ensure you have a comfortable experience. Using a fine needle, your provider will strategically place the filler to achieve your desired look. These injections only take a few minutes. You may experience mild swelling, redness or bruising, which usually subsides within a few days. The results are immediate, though it can take up to two weeks for the filler to fully settle. Depending on the type of filler used, the results can last up to a year before any touch-ups are needed.

Which one is right for you?

When deciding between a lip flip and lip filler, the right choice really depends on your aesthetic goals. If you’re looking for a fuller upper lip without adding volume, a lip flip is the best option. But if you are looking for a plumper, more voluminous look, lip filler provides immediate results by adding structure and fullness to lips.

“Lip flip and lip filler sound similar, but are fundamentally very different.” explains Dr. Daniel Schlessinger. “A lip flip is great for those who want a subtle lift to the upper lip without increasing its size, while lip filler provides real definition and volume. Many patients choose to combine both treatments, creating natural-looking fullness.”

If you’re unsure which option is right for you, a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist can help determine the best approach for your unique goals. Dr. Joel Schlessinger shares, “Each patient has different needs. We take the time to customize a treatment plan that aligns with our patient’s desired results. Whether it’s a lip flip, filler or a combination of both, we want every patient to feel confident and happy with their results.”
