Skin tags are harmless flaps of skin that commonly develop as we age. Anyone can develop a skin tag – or several – but some people are more likely to see them appear on the neck, in or near the armpits, in the groin area, on the eyelids, between the upper thighs, under the breasts, and on the back and abdomen. This issue is often inherited, meaning those with family members who suffer from skin tags may find themselves at a higher risk of obtaining them.

Skin tag treatment options

He can determine the best method to remove your skin tags. He may use a scalpel to cut the skin tag after numbing the area. Alternatively, if they aren’t skin tags, but instead a common growth called seborrheic keratosis, he may choose to use liquid nitrogen that freezes the skin and causes the lesion to fall off. Another method is cauterization in which the skin tag is quickly zapped with an electric current.
All methods are simple and effective office procedures that can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

A skin tag is a small, brown, or flesh-colored flap of skin that is usually narrow at its base and looks like a stalk. They may range in size from very tiny to the size of a pencil eraser. Some are the same color as the surrounding skin. Others can be darker in color. Depending on where your skin tags are located on the body, they have the potential to become twisted, irritated, or inflamed. Necklaces or tight shirts, for example, can irritate skin tags around the neck. Tight underwear can interfere with skin tags in the groin and cause bleeding.
There is no known reason for the appearance of skin tags other than heredity. They occur most frequently at sites where the skin is rubbed by clothing or on other body parts such as between the upper thighs and in the armpit area. Some dermatologists, including Dr. Schlessinger, feel they may also have an infectious component.
Age is a factor because skin tags may develop over time. People who are overweight often develop skin tags due to increased irritation and rubbing of folds of skin. Sometimes hormones cause skin tags, especially during pregnancy.
