BOTOX® and Jeuveau® are both FDA-approved injectable treatments, known as neuromodulators, that temporarily diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While BOTOX® is the best known of these wrinkle relaxers, there are several other products that are used. All of these treatments use an active ingredient called botulinum toxin type A—a neurotoxin that works to relax the facial muscles beneath the skin resulting in a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Dr. Joel Schlessinger and his son, Dr. Daniel Schlessinger, have worked on the development and new usages of many of these products including both BOTOX® and Jeuveau®.

While BOTOX® and Jeuveau® are similar and both use the same active ingredient, their chemical configuration is slightly different. Whether you’re a “tox” treatment veteran or new to the world of injections, we’re here to help you better understand the difference between BOTOX® and Jeuveau®, so you can feel confident in choosing the best option for you. Read on to learn about:

  • Key differences between BOTOX® or Jeuveau®
  • What concerns do BOTOX® and Jeuveau® work best for?
  • Finding the right BOTOX® or Jeuveau® injector

BOTOX® is one of the most well-known and widely used neuromodulators. It was first approved for medical use in 1989 and later gained FDA approval for cosmetic purposes in 2002. BOTOX® works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, thereby preventing muscles from firing, which leads to wrinkles.

Jeuveau®, commonly referred to as “new BOTOX®” or “NewTox”, is a newer neuromodulator that received FDA approval in 2019. Like BOTOX®, Dysport® and XEOMIN®, Jeuveau® uses the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A to temporarily relax the facial muscles for a smoother, firmer appearance.

One notable distinction is the manufacturing process. Jeuveau® is formulated using a proprietary purification method called Hi-Pure™, resulting in a purified form of botulinum toxin type A that may start working faster than BOTOX® (in as little as two days instead of three to five).

Jeuveau® has also become known for having a “lighter touch” than BOTOX® and other neurotoxins.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger, a board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon, explains, “Jeuveau® is an excellent choice for millennials and anyone looking to achieve a fresh, natural look. It’s a great option for those wanting to dip their toes in the water with a treatment that has nice results, without looking overworked or overdone.”

Furthermore, Jeuveau® is primarily marketed for cosmetic use, whereas BOTOX® has both medical therapeutic and cosmetic applications. BOTOX® also has a long-standing reputation for safety and effectiveness, making it a go-to choice for many patients and providers.

BOTOX® is primarily used to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines, by temporarily relaxing the underlying facial muscles that create these expressions. Beyond its cosmetic benefits, BOTOX® is also a trusted treatment for a variety of medical conditions. It’s FDA-approved to help manage chronic migraines, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms and even eye conditions like crossed eyes and eyelid twitching.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon, shares, “I use BOTOX® every day in my practice to address a wide range of concerns, from smoothing forehead wrinkles to slimming the jawline. It’s incredible to see how much BOTOX® treatments have evolved in the decades since it first became available to dermatologists. As one of the most researched cosmetic products, it’s no surprise it is such a trusted name in aesthetic medicine.”

He adds, “Lately, I’ve been especially excited about using BOTOX® for areas like lip lines, chin wrinkles, neck wrinkles and the masseter muscles, including for TMJ-related issues. Ongoing research is continuously expanding its uses, and I’m confident the future holds even more innovative options for patients. I was proud to have worked on the clinical study that led to BOTOX® approval for neck wrinkles just recently.”

Jeuveau® is primarily used for cosmetic purposes to smooth wrinkles and fine lines. Most commonly, glabellar lines (frown lines between the brows), crow’s feet and smile lines, along with other expression lines on the face. Jeuveau® has quickly gained popularity among those new to injectables for its ability to create a refreshed, rejuvenated look without too much stiffness.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger explains, “Jeuveau® is the newest neurotoxin available, sometimes referred to as ‘NewTox.’ Many of my patients who want a treatment that allows some movement will try Jeuveau®. It has a fresh, undone look that works well for all ages. Jeuveau® is also a great option for those who may have experienced a heavy feeling with other neurotoxins, like BOTOX®. It also works really well for neck and chest lines.”

While it’s easy to be tempted by the lowest priced injector in your city offering neurotoxin injections like BOTOX® and Jeuveau®, it’s important to remember that by far the best and safest way to achieve your desired results is to see a board-certified dermatologist. A dermatologist has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and will be able to finely tune your treatment, so your results look natural.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger explains, “While just about anybody nowadays can become an “injector”, having a deeper understanding of facial anatomy is crucial to achieving the best results, whether you’re getting BOTOX®, Jeuveau®, filler or any other cosmetic treatment. Everyone’s facial structure is unique, so every treatment needs to be tailored to that person.”

At Schlessinger MD, all BOTOX® and Jeuveau® injections are administered by board-certified dermatologists Drs. Joel and Daniel Schlessinger, so you can feel confident knowing you’re in experienced hands. In fact, they bring decades of combined experience to Schlessinger MD, helping patients of all ages look and feel their best.
